Using a Hero 7 for an extended period of time requires a good battery. Shooting timelapses requires upwards of 2. I have 5 batteries which are always fully charged and there are times when I am doing an overnight camp. Note: Using settings such as 4K or fps will decrease battery life quicker. Why oh why did GoPro never have this feature before???
The Hero 7 now has an inbuilt timer which comes in two forms:. Voice control for me is a bit weird as for some reason I have never really been a fan. I think I am being lazy when using the voice control feature, but there are times when it really does come in handy. Using the voice control comes in handy when you are using mounts such as a head mount, chesty mount or for some reason are out of reach of the Hero 7.
A quick tip for voice control! If you have multiple cameras set to voice activated or voice command, be sure to only have voice control turned on for one camera as you may turn on all of your cameras when you give them the order. Despite my Hero 7 having a few glitches on the LCD screen and issues with saving files to the micro SD card these issues were resolved by updating the software , the Hero 7 has performed relatively well.
I have managed to use every setting and mode in as many different environments and situations as possible and it easily out performs the Hero 6. One thing I am stoked about is how much of a quicker performer the Hero 7 is to the Hero 6. I have attached my GoPro to the outside of a moving bus during rush hour in Sri Lanka, mounted it to a javelin and a discus and launched it to see how it would look in terms of stabilisation.
I have even thrown my GoPro 20 metres into the air and have it hit the ground just to test how strong these things are. If you are a vlogger, cinematographer, photographer or filmmaker, or you just like taking the occasional photo, the Hero 7 is unbeatable.
There are a lot of other products on the market like the Sony Action cameras and the DJI Osmo, but not being biased, the Hero 7 is truly the best on the market. If you currently have a GoPro Hero 5 or Hero 6 and are wondering whether or not you should upgrade, the answer depends on what you will use it for. The HyperSmooth stabilisation is seriously next level, and the fact that you can mount this to a helmet, chesty mount or hold it on a stick and get gimbal-like footage is crazy.
Personally I say yes — upgrade if you can afford it and you think you might shoot video. Buy It On Amazon. I hope you enjoyed my GoPro Hero 7 Black review. If you did leave a comment below and let me know if you have any questions! Started travelling in , so far reaching the trails of the Upper Mustang, Nepal, scaled Mount Ollivier, New Zealand first ascent of Sir Edmund Hillary , got hot chilli in my eye in Vietnam, chased by a pack of wild monkeys in Singapore, stupidly climbed the Eiffel Tower, France in shorts and a shirt while it was raining and 6 degrees while in Venice, Italy I managed to get lost in order to get found while in Central Australia my best friends were camels.
Check it all our on my photography website and Instagram. Check forums including gopros support forum before choosing a camera. Unfortunately this is an issue with a lot of the GoPro. Thanks, I bought my Gopro7 black for my 2 month vacation in Raja Ampat When I used the settings on 2.
I would caution anybody who wants to use the wide angle fov, I did not like it , it skewers the perspectives, I found linear much better. Unfortunately for what ended up being my most exciting videos, cuttlefish, sharks and much more, I decided to use protune which leaves the video dull and flat so the color can be added afterwards. The free editing software which one finds on the internet such as Wondershare or VSDC, at the end when I wanted to save or export my videos, it became impossible without paying for it.
The worst part is after using the software to add the color back in, the end result still was not as good as when I used the regular settings. I am very disappointed. I cannot recommend Gopro7 black. Unfortunately yes. Ours does freeze sometimes but corrects itself. We have had no freezing on the Hero 8 so far.
Thanks for the great review! Do you think it is still worth buying the GoPro Hero 7 Black since a new release is probably about 5 months off? I sadly beg to differ on the Hero 7. I have 5 of them, they all fail my tests of being consistent to film in hot temps. I was working in Arizona, it was degrees outside, granted hot, but all cameras failed when trying to shoot 4k at 60fps. The black shell does not help when the camera is in the sun. It is a remarkable camera but not robust for hot temps.
Half of the U. This is a camera for winter if you want to get best results. GoPro needs to up their game, put a heat sink or other to make it more robust. For the time being, I hope that GoPro Support will actually pass along enhancement requests I made to a supervisor, so that they can rework their next iteration to be more stable. Thanks for the review. I purchased the Hero 7 Black last week and after reading this, I know I made the right choice. I am heading on a surf trip to Spain next week where the Hero 7 will take her maiden voyage on the front of my board.
I am stoked to say the least! Thank you for the wonderful review. I want to ask your opinion, since nowadays there a lot of OEM products for Gopro, which one would you think is better for an OEM battery? Telesin or Kingma? Or would you rather spend extra for the original Gopro battery? Thanks, Calumn Hockey this is an amazing review Special Thanks for nomadasaurus. I am Ajay Kumar and I am running a Paragliding blog flynfeel. Again Thanks, Calumn Hockey.
Thanks for this awesome review! I love Amazon. Things can get expensive on an island. Totally worth it though! Drones are a big one too if you have ever used one. I bet it would provide a lot of value if you had a drone review. If so, is this corrected via Photoshop or similar, or can the camera do this automatically if. Will use the 7 Black for still photos only, but your review says little about still photo specs.
Such as: What is the aspect ratio for stills? Is aspect ratio changeable? What is FOV in degrees for stills? Is FOV changeable zooming — digital or optical? What 35mm camera equivalent does this FOV equate? This works with Facebook right now, but is set to shortly work with YouTube ad other channels too.
The GoPro Hero 7 Black offers the same kind of rugged and largely rubbered body as the Hero 6 Black, although the sides of the devices are just as smooth as the front, rather than ridged. Build quality of the Hero 7 Black feels just as solid as the Hero 6 Black. A small plastic frame that wraps around the GoPro Hero 7 Black and clips into place is provided as standard, and this can be mounted on an adhesive stand to keep the camera in place, in addition to many other mounts for helmets, handlebars and more.
One of the advantages of the newer GoPro Hero 8 Black is that it has built-in mounting prongs, which means you no longer need this frame. But you do soon become used to how rough you need to be with it. Turn the Hero 7 Black on and you can see just how much GoPro changed things around from its predecessor. There's a refreshed UI, with key information such as current frame rate and resolution condensed into a smaller space, and green icons to show battery life and remaining cards space now easier to see against brighter subjects than the previous white ones.
You can still alternate between shooting modes with a press of the Mode button on the side, but you can also swipe to do the same. The UI on the Hero 7 Black also adapts to portrait orientation when you have the camera positioned this way, which makes it easier to operate. You can disable it if you think this will be more of a nuisance than a help, but it doesn't seem to be so sensitive enough to warrant the average user needing to do this.
Or, as it happens, 'oh shit'. It would also be good to add your own commands to the Hero 7 Black, which is one area we can see this evolving, although pretty much all key functions are covered already. Necessary Necessary. Uses: High action POV that you want to capture super slow-motion. Uses: Surf, skate, snowboard POV in ultra-slow motion. All lower resolution modes share similar image quality attributes as the higher resolution versions. For example, is a scaled down version of 2.
Spot meter comes up first. Tap the middle of the spot to lock the exposure. You can move this around in the scene by tapping in other places before you lock. To get the best, most professional looking content, I suggest locking exposure as often as possible. Some of this may be over your head, so if you have a question ask below! If it gets dark I will manually adjust settings either raise ISO or lower frame-rate. The only thing you need to watch out for is lowlight motion blur. Lightroom will apply the GoPro color preset to the photo regardless.
Time lapse photo or burst are typically the photo modes I use for action shots. Many of the settings and reasonings are the same as above. It will take the next photo as soon as the previous is done processing on the camera. I like keeping it at this level because I like a little motion blur in my action shots. TimeWarp is a new feature in the HERO7 based around creating stabilized motion time lapses, otherwise known as Hyperlapses. How does this differ from a time lapse? Now with TimeWarp, you can capture many dynamic activities and not worry about how stable the camera is.
TimeWarp opens up new opportunities to capture long-form activities as short, shareable moments. For example, a 30 minute kayak down a river from a head mounted camera in TimeWarp would give an entirely new perspective of the flow of a river run.
The stabilization in TimeWarp is truly ground-breaking. TimeWarp offers speed options between 2x and 30x. Because of the way TimeWarp works, each faster speed option becomes increasingly more stable. Imagine the camera is bouncing from left to right.
An unintelligent time lapse would capture frames at set intervals, no matter where the camera is pointing. When it gets put together it looks chaotic because some frames are looking left, some frames are looking right, and some are straight. TimeWarp looks for consecutive video frames that will match using the accelerometer and gyro. If the video is sped up by 30x, it has a lot more opportunity amongst dropped frames to find the right one that will match the previous frame facing straight ahead.
Because of this, I rarely use speeds below 10X while doing anything handheld. If my camera is mounted to something steadily moving such as a car or bike, I can look to try 2x or 5x. TimeWarp is available in 4K and at 30fps for , and 2. It will bring up a spot meter box where you hold — press in the center of that spot meter and it will switch to a lock button. Hit the check mark to confirm! The camera will remain paired to your phone via Bluetooth during the stream.
You can stream in P which looks great online. When live streaming, the camera will remain in default video settings with HyperSmooth on and no ProTune. Also note that you cannot have the camera upside down or vertically in portrait mode during live streaming. Currently Facebook does not have the ability to read the GoPro orientation metadata. HERO7 has a host of welcomed usability updates that I feel are a bigger story than some of the touted features.
Overall the UI is much improved, with clearer flow between actions. Resolutions are now organized in different buckets based around aspect ratio, so the options feel much more simplified. For each aspect ratio vs you now have 4 options of resolution, instead of seeing the whole list of 8 in a row at once. One of my favorite new features is the ability to shoot any piece of content in a vertical format. In addition to standard videos and photos, you can also use TimeWarp vertically.
You can tell the clip will be vertical if either the front screen or back screen is rotated 90deg. This is a great way to film short, shareable moments. The back screen will show you a red progress bar around the outer edge of the screen to let you know how much time is left, while the front display will show a countdown timer. For hands free action content, combine this with voice control to get little snippets of action that are easy to share.
If I have moments already picked out at 15s each, it becomes easy to pop those over to my story after a day skiing. Playback is one of the biggest areas of improvement in the HERO7 usability. If you want to review footage on your HERO7 Black quickly, swipe up on the idle back screen to see the last photo or video taken.
Swipe down to go back to the idle screen, or swipe left to go to the previous clip. Next, we finally have a way to play content in slow-motion directly on the camera. HEVC is the higher quality h. From the idle screen, swipe down from the top to reveal the settings. You can have photos or bursts snap after 3 or 10 seconds. Also the front screen displays a countdown timer so you know just when that selfie is going to pop. Your GoPro will remember your preferred Wi-Fi network, letting you live stream and send stuff to the cloud more easily and quickly.
Also, in the App, the connection handshake is very seamless. Another welcomed change is the GoPro App no longer has a forced login. This along with new tuning improves audio clarity and adds depth. I will try to give you guys an update as soon as I speak to some audiophiles that play with this camera alongside HERO6.
I prefer it to pick up whatever sounds are happening vs. HDR high dynamic range , MFNR multi-frame noise reduction , and LTM local tone mapping are all of the different types of photos it snaps, then spits you out the best looking one for the scene. SuperPhoto can only be used in single photo mode; however, you can use it for action shots if you use either the new photo timer, or voice control, or both.
HERO7 is the same size and shape as its predecessor. The frame is also the same, except for a 7 printed on the side so everyone can know you have that new-new, even when mounted. In the drone the only new feature you will not be able to take advantage of is TimeWarp — it has not been ported over to have Karma drone support.
The not-so-good news is that batteries are the same size and form-factor — meaning no improvement to battery life that I can tell. I always take note of how my close friends react to using new cameras for the first time. All of them have been ecstatic, calling or texting me to tell me how impressive HyperSmooth is, along with the other welcomed usability updates.
If you have a HERO5 and are looking to up your quality from all perspectives, this is a definite buy as well. If the features and updates I spoke about above sound game changing to you then look into upgrading. Thanks for your continued support! Hope all of this helps you make an informed decision about the new gear, as well as getting you dialed once you get your camera!
